The main chemical characteristic of argon is its inertia. At high pressures, argon exhibits a peculiar behavior, deviating from the ideal gas law. In fact, for example, a 200 bar cylinder contains 7% more gas if compared to the quantity that could be expected according to the ideal gas law.
This property makes argon an ideal protective gas even at very high temperatures typical of arc welding or metallurgy.
